What is Dēmos-Dynamics?

Sharif Abdullah coined the term “demos-dynamics” to describe the multiple and interlocking processes by which people change.

Dēmos: the common people (Latin).

Dynamics: about change, interaction, adaptation, energy and power.

Dēmos -dynamics: How people interact and change – for the good of all. The study of change elements (factors and actions) in human societies. Demos-dynamics refers to the effects of various forces, factors and actions on the interactions of human populations.

Dēmos-Dynamics is a field of study and inquiry and a course of action, an attempt to understand the complexity of human interactions in the 21st Century.

Dēmos-dynamics includes:

• Inclusivity and Diversity Studies
• Spirituality
• Conflict Resolution
• Deep Identity studies
• Sustainable development strategies (including economic, social, cultural approaches)
• Political/ social/ cultural/ religious movements and dynamics
• Emergence
• Collective intelligence
• Cultural competency
• Values/ ethics
• Civic engagement
• Dialogic processes

How Dēmos-Dynamics Works...

There are many, many aspects that make up any human society. Human beings interact with each other and with their environment in highly complex ways.

It is the dynamic interaction of these human elements that is the foundation for demos-dynamics. In old-style disciplines, different elements are examined isolated from each other, making it difficult to understand the dynamic nature of human interactions. Piecemeal approaches may help solve some problems, but can do lasting damage to the morale and communications within an organization.

Demos-dynamics provides the way to understand how people behave in the “real world”.

Dēmos-Dynamics and “Deep Identity”

By definition, “deep identity” are those parts of your identity that you received before you gained the capacity for objective thought. Your deep identity is the part of your identity that is the most difficult to think about rationally. Because of this, deep identity does not change easily.

How important are the aspects of deep identity? Right now, deep identity is the basis of the 90+ wars raging on our planet right now. And, deep identity is the basis of most of the conflict taking place within your organization. People cling tenaciously to their deep identities -- until invited to transcend them. Commonway has proven abilities to help you identify and constructively work with deep identity within your organization.

The Five Deep Identity Factors

• Race/ethnicity/culture
• Language
• Class
• Religion
• Gender

Deep identity aspects are...
• Part of every human’s genetic and/or cultural makeup
• Learned by every human from our parents and our community
• The basis of centuries-long conflicts
