The Challenge of Otherness
The issue of “Otherness” has plagued America from its beginning… and even before. Whether as villain or victim, virtually all other nations have faced similar histories: while “The Other” may be different, the effects are the same. While significant progress has occurred over the years, we STILL have not fully addressed this issue.
The issue of “Otherness” still occupies the front pages of our newspapers and stirs emotions from coast to coast and around the world. And, after the centuries, we still don’t seem to know what to do.
What is “Otherness”?
How do you deal with the issue of “the Other”? And, what is “Otherness”? The concept is simple: your “Other” is anyone who does not behave as you expect or assume. Otherness can be based on skin color, or based on class. Otherness can be based on gender, or political ideology, or language… even hair styles or food preferences.
Everyone deals with Otherness. EVERYONE. As “Otherness” is rooted in our culture and consciousness, everyone has someone or some group who is ‘Other’ for them. The problem is not Otherness, but allowing Otherness to cause us to separate from each other, or cause us to oppress and/or denigrate the ‘Other’.
Because everybody has their Other, all of us can learn how to best interact with the Other, how to address the issue of Otherness.
