Like all birth, the societal birthing process is painful, messy, necessary and inevitable. We are transiting to a new way of thinking about ourselves, a new understanding of the role of humans on the planet. The shift in consciousness is necessary for human survival.
Transforming our consciousness will create profound new visions of what it means to be “human”. For our survival, through our shift to Holonic Consciousness, we will become “colony humans”. Together, we will form the ultimate democracy, one that will be unlike every other form of human governance that has gone before. The Nation of Gaia will be the first nation that is planetary, inclusive, peaceful, spiritual, abundant and CONSCIOUS.
This book includes four Appendices that explore the physical and metaphysical aspects of Holonic Consciousness, and includes a 1,000 year vision for our future!

Part One: What The Baby Looks Like
Chapter 1: The Impetus for Change [Our Pending Societal Death]
We are giving birth to a new society. There is no birth without labor pains. We pay too much attention to our societal problems and almost no attention to the actual baby. Our societal challenges are the chrysalis necessary for us to morph into our new form. But, If you don’t know that you are pregnant, you may believe that you are dying and will make all the wrong decisions.
Chapter 2: The Vision and the Goal [Birthing the Baby]
Like all birth, the societal birthing process is painful, messy, necessary and inevitable. We are transiting to a new way of thinking about ourselves, a new understanding of the role of humans on the planet. The shift in consciousness is necessary for human survival. The shift comes from us answering a higher imperative than our selfish wants and desires.
Chapter 3: Behaving Ourselves [Human Principles and Values]
Our shift to a new form of consciousness will create a new and distinct set of societal values, along with new cultural practices.
Part Two: Birthing a Mature Human Society
Chapter 4: The Solution [Getting Serious About Transformation]
Transforming our consciousness will create profound new visions of what it means to be “human”. For our survival, we are destined to become “colony humans”. The transformation of human consciousness is a new and exciting step in our evolution as humans on this planet. The “colony humans”, energized by love and faith, will become the most positive, productive, sustainable and renewing life form on our planet.
Chapter 5: Beyond the Status Quo [Living on the Frontier of a New Society]
Our transformed consciousness will generate new definitions to concepts like “freedom”, “wealth”, “authenticity”, “peace”, and “healing”.

Chapter 6: Holonic Governance [Our Pathway to Ultimate Democracy]
Holonic (colony) governance is the ultimate, most fundamental form of politics, democracy, and economics, and a foundational principle of the Nation of Gaia.
Chapter 7: The Nation of Gaia [The Foundations of a Nation]
The Nation of Gaia is unlike every other form of human governance that has gone before. Gaia is the first nation that is planetary, inclusive, peaceful, spiritual and abundant.
Appendix 1: The Five Latent Powers
There are human powers that have lain dormant for thousands of years. These powers are well known to Keepers but unknown to and denied by Breakers.
With the coming of Holonic Consciousness, these Latent Powers will activate. The Activated Powers will provide the tools necessary to solve our most pressing social and ecological challenges.
Appendix 2: The LIFE Energy Field
Life, all of LIFE, forms a field of energy, of which we are a part. We can only understand our lives and actions by reference to the Life Energy Field. Life and Love are related.
Appendix 3: A Thousand Year Plan for Earth
We become a mature species when we develop a mature plan. We become a society that works for all when we become a society that plans for and with all. One thousand years isn’t that long a period of time.
Appendix 4: Toward a Holonic Economic System
The Holonic Economic System (HES) is the practical application of Holonic Consciousness. It is the seed for a “third force” economic system: neither communist/socialist nor capitalist/corporatist. It is a sustainable catalyst that will grow communities out of economic, social, and spiritual poverty. It is designed to generate sustainable economic communities (colonies).

I have read several of Shariff’s books. This I feel is the culmination of a lot of time and effort, or as Shariff would say,” A true labor of love”, not to put too fine a point on his work. Shariff takes the separateness out of separateness in a loving and neutral way. The materialist or breaker consciousness will not move us forward on this beautiful Gaia if we want to survive. I will be rereading this book and taking a much more thorough look at my own actions. Thank you Shariff.

BIRTHING THE NATION OF GAIA

If Creating A World That Works For All was food for thought, Birthing the Nation of Gaia is a blueprint for getting to that world. First, however, we have to acknowledge, Shariff postulates, that “Something is about to happen—We can FEEL IT. We are about to give birth to a new human society.”
Shariff uses the metaphor of the caterpillar and the butterfly to show how the birthing of the nation of Gaia will unfold. The caterpillar devours as much plant life as it can. Then it stops and goes through a meltdown which eventually produces the butterfly. Like human births, “The process is painful, messy and INEVITABLE.” Old systems and processes must break down to clear the way for the new. Breaker or Solon consciousness which is primarily self-serving, must give way to Mender or Holon consciousness, which serves the needs of all sentient beings, not just humans. “And like the caterpillar,” Shariff says, “we won’t do that because we WANT to. We will transform because all beings must answer to a higher imperative.”
Shariff describes six societal transitions we must go through. These are: 1) From 8.7 million living species to “One Life;” 2) From violence to “peace and security for all;” 3) From dogmatic religions to spirituality; 4) From despair to fulfillment; 5) From fear, greed, hoarding, and toxic relationships to abundant enoughness; 6) From individualized to Holon consciousness.
Shariff also explains ten principles of Universal Spirituality: 1) Thou shall love (and be loved); 2) Thou shall be at peace; 3) Thou shall be of compassionate service; 4) Thou shall forgive; 5) Thou shall be humble; 6) Thou shall be inclusive; 7) Thou shall be authentic; 8) Thou shall be grateful; 9) Thou shall be responsible; 10) Thou shall awaken.
For a new society to come into being, “we have to fix ourselves first,” says Shariff. “We have to take a long view and see the bigger picture.” The builders of the cathedrals in Europe took hundreds of years to build them. Thus, several generations were devoted to the task. We, then, have to be willing to start on a task that we will not see the end of.
What do we have to get beyond to fix ourselves? Shariff details the following: 1) Beyond slavery: living in freedom; 2) Beyond money: living true wealth; 3) Beyond our demons: living our authentic selves; 4) Beyond individualism: living our relationships; 5) Beyond fear, hate, anger and violence: living our peace and security; 6) Beyond toxicity and waste: living our healing economy; 7) Beyond adolescence: living our maturity; 8) Beyond greed and poverty: living our common ownership.
Birthing the Nation of Gaia is not only a book for the visionaries of our time, but for everyone who cares about the future of their progeny, their neighbors, and our beloved planet. Perhaps you are already living the new human society in some way. By reading this book, you will certainly be inspired not only to do more, but to be more. I can envision book studies and college courses based on this book. Without doubt, Birthing the Nation of Gaia is the most impactful book I have ever read.
